I love shushi so when i tried this place I was so dissappointed. I ordered the fresh salmon sushi and it smelled fishy and tasted fishy. Anyone who has had this experience knows that it is not good. Sushi is not supposed to taste or smell fishy. I wont go back again. The noodle dish ordered was pasty. Not a good experience. Drinks were good.
Pros: drinks and service
Cons: smelly bad tasting food

This restaurant offers the very best sushi in all of Houston hands down. The sushi is always fresh, the service is wonderful and the menu choices are exceptional with a wide range of signature rolls as well. Everyone I bring here always comments on how awesome the sushi is.
Freshest, best tasting and a staff who remembers you.

Ok, so sometimes you have to wait. Sometimes they don't want to see you go and keep feeding you little tastes of the off the menu foods they can make. The manager of old mixed with the owners of new is a perfect combination. If you feel you are waiting too long, just ask the staff for what you need. They are very friendly here, and are not trying to ignore anyone. The old management description of a past review was close, but they were wonderful people. I went so far as to prepare an after hours feast for their staff.
As for food, it is mouth-watering, fresh and nothing fishy. Might be raw fish, but some might never know it with eyes closed. There are many cooked seafood and freshwater fish sushis available. If you have a problem with the seaweed, ask for the rice paper. This allows many with mild seafood allergies due to iodine to eat so many of the sushis available with vegetable or freshwater fish.
Splurge sometime and try the scorpion roll. Excellent mix of flavors. Amazing presentation.
Simple favorites:
YAKI UDON- Rice noodles, without the soup, served with chicken and beef (shrimp? bad memory) in a light sauce. Remember, the proper way to eat it is not a single noodle at a time. Try the fun, easy and traditional way of lifting a group of noodles to your mouth. Let the rest fall back. Slurp one of these, and you are in for a nose slapping.
TEN, KATSU, and YAKITORI DON- Rice bowls with pork and egg, grilled chicken or shrimp tempura and vegetables.
ANY TEMPURA- shrimp, chicken or vegetables. You always get some vegetables like green bell pepper or sweet potato, but if a group of people orders one of all three, there is more of the wonderful tempura sweet potato to go around.
SALMON TERIAKI- never had this before them, but I am in love with it too.
Beef Tataki appetizer - so fresh, so good.
AGEDASHI TOFU appetizer - quickly deep fried tofu with traditional corn starch as breading. Trust me, it is great. HARD TO HOLD WITH CHOPSTICKS! Fun though.
Pros: Choices, never neglected, off menu tastes and parking
Cons: Sometimes slow

We have eaten at Atami's many times and each time the food has been great! We usually eat at the Sushi bar and are known by Sushi chefs who take good care of us. We have eaten and many Sushi resturants in Houston and none top Atami's for quality or taste.
