Garden Oaks Elementary School Reviews

It's true, a lot of these children are lower income and many are hard to manage as far as keeping them behaved and focused, but the staff does a beautiful job. I observed a class recently and I can't fathom how this teacher had so much patience and works so hard all day long to keep all the children engaged and each working at his own level (this was a Montessori class). We transferred IN to HISD from Cy-Fair to be part of this program. My child is four, and I've seen many positive changes in her in only a few months - organizational skills, curiosity about the outdoors, etc. I have great expectations from this school.

This school has a fantastic Montossori Program! If you are looking for a school that keeps up with triditonal expectations and still allows a child to grow at their own pace. A school that offers on on one attention and encourages parent envolvement then this is a great school for you! We have a son who is a slow learner and a son who excells in every area and this school was able to meet both of our sons needs. We love the administration and the teachers. The communication between them and the parents is great. You can really feel that you can work out your problems here at this school. We highly reccommend it to anyone. This school has a good ethnic mix which we believe attributes to it's lower test scores. But all of the teachers are wonderful! We love this school!

My children have done very well at Garden Oaks Elementary -- they love learning, have excellent teachers, a pretty campus, stellar test scores, teachers who teach up to their potential, classmates in our neighborhood & to top it off, we walk to school!

The 'habitat' area is beautiful as are many other gardens at the school -- cared for by students, teachers & parents. Both the traditional and Montessori classes have excellent teachers. My children are upper income as well as g/t (Vanguard) and they have done very well at Garden Oaks Elementary.

'Horrible'? Come and see! Better yet become one of our many volunteers! GO is a unique community school utilizing the outdoors with a thriving Urban Harvest garden program, many natural settings for learning and an excellent pond habitat. The dedicated staff needs no defense.

The school is horrible. Teachers do not teach. They visit all day long. Students are allowed to play in class and the principal does nothing about it. Just look at the TAKS scores! I moved my child form this school.

My children (in 1st and 3rd grade) are excelling at this school and they love learning! Their teachers have been excellent. My 1st grade girl and 3rd grade boy have both tested into Vanguard (G/T), and they have been well challenged by Garden Oak's certified Vanguard teachers. The principal has also been very responsive, setting up a new Spanish class in response to parents' requests.

My children have been in the Montessori program since age 3 (currently in 1st and 2nd grades) and we love the program. The program has excellent teachers and really challenges the students.

We tried in vain to get speech therapy for our daughter starting over 1 year ago. The school's speech therapist went on maternaty leave for 3 months and then quit after coming back for 10 days. The school did nothing to help us get therapy from another school. This year, they are telling us that we do not qualify for any speech therapy services because our daughter goes to private school. I feel this is a systemic problem of public schools in Texas and the nation. I will keep my daughter in private school where they care about her and not about getting more money if my daughter enrolls with them. HISD should be ashamed of themselves for denying us a much needed service. No wonder people want to reduce funding to public schools.

i believe this school does not reconize pre-schoolers. it seems like pre-k is just somewhere to go for 3 hours

Garden Oaks is nicely located in the middle of a quiet neighborhood and is fairly attractive. There are children that do not live in that neighborhood that also attend the school. Some come from the nearby apartments, etc. We have had 1 really bad teacher there and managed to have our child switched to another class, but all of the other teachers have been absolutely terrific! My child has excelled academically in this school.
